What are Mudras?

Mudras are described in detail in ancient yogic texts and scriptures, such as the Gheranda Samhita, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and Shiva Samhita.

According to Ayurvedic medicine, our hands hold the endpoints of energetic pathways carrying prana (life force energy) through our body. These energy pathways are called meridians (the same meridians used in acupuncture and reflexology).

Mudras allow us to go inward and recharge our energy flow through our chakras, and also our physical body.

The term applies to the use of specific hand gestures during meditation, yoga and or mantra, that carry specific goals of channeling your body's energy flow.

There are more than 100 known mudras that have been developed over the centuries.

Mudras and Meditation

Mudras are utilized in meditation and yoga to awaken the divine spiritual power that is within each of us and to balance energy within the body.

If we place our hands in a position of calm or stillness, the mind can mirror the same qualities. Thus, a mudra can be an instrument to prepare the mind for meditation.

Depending on the chosen mudra, they can create an energetic seal within the body by sealing a circuit of energy existing between two or more points in the body.

Mudras and Manifestation

Utilizing mudras in your meditation practice will help you cultivate stillness of mind, while refining and expanding your awareness. When the mind is quiet and focused, it opens and allows universal consciousness to flow freely, especially through the third eye (Ajna) and also crown (Sahasrara) chakras.

In addition to changing your mindset and behaviors, you will need to stay focused and remove any obstacles which may cloud your vision, including fear and negative self-talk.
